Happy Valentines: An Homage to Lightfoot, and a Wish for You

Gordon LightfootSome things, throughout the course of our lives, are just timeless. A first, or lasting, love; a memorable journey to a far-away place; the joy of generations that is the birth of our children. As happens so often, when these moments are accompanied by a wonderful song, that is a treasurable bit of timelessness. I believe that we should never take love or music for granted. Your life has its own soundtrack, even if known only by you.

Singer-songwriter Gordon Lightfoot, one of Canada’s great cultural exports to the world, is 71 now and has been performing for over 50 years. He has been on my mind ever since I mentioned him in a recent post about Dave Carroll. I thought it might be nice on this Valentines Day to pay Gordon a tribute by presenting two performances of his greatest love song, “If You Could Read My Mind.”

The two performances are separated by at least 30 years. In the second video, Gordon’s voice may not be as strong, but his artistry and passion have only improved with the passage of time. He is clearly still doing what he loves, all these decades later. And that, my friends, is my Valentines Day wish for each of you:

May your flights of love and fancy depart and arrive on time;
May you always be seated next to the ones you cherish.
May your life’s passages soar on wings of love, passion, and artistry.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

    Thank you. . .what a treat!

    I am a lot older than I ever thought I would be but I remember Gordon Lightfoot from 1967 when I followed every folk artist. Funny too, I worked for United from 2006-2008 and had the worst boss I ever had in more than 40 years of working. It was hell. And this comes from someone who has travelled the world and lived many great adventures including bartending on the steamboats that went up and down the Mississippi River. But tonight, while surfing, I got to enjoy both Dave Carroll and Gordon Lightfoot--what a treat indeed!
